A Look at Flat Bottom Boats
Flat bottom boats are the type of boats, which have a flat hull. The most common example of this kind of boat is the John or Jon Boat.
There are many types of hulls, the round hull, V-shaped hull, cathedral hull, tunnel hulls, and the flat hull. Among these bottoms, the flat bottom boats are the most recommended to be used in shallow and still waters like lake, pond, and small, shallow rivers.
However, this type of boat is not advisable for rough waters or the open sea because it cannot “cut through” the waves unlike the round bottom or the v-shaped bottom, which can glide easily across the rapid waters. Further, flat bottom boats are not really stable and may get bumpy when riding in wavy waters. Additional caution should be taken when on it, especially if you are with kids or non-swimmers.
On the other hand, this type of boat is more energy saving, since it requires less power to speed it up. And if you are using paddles to maneuver it, you would not have a hard time paddling through unlike with other forms of hulls.
In general, flat bottom boats are only advisable for a smooth and slow leisure ride. If you are planning to take this kind of boat fishing, then you must reconsider. This boat may not work well especially when you have a lot of maneuvering to do. Due to its limitations, you must practice safety when riding it. Weigh your options well.
